Genital aesthetic surgeries - Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty — an aesthetic and functional surgical procedure aimed at tightening and reconstructing the vaginal canal.
Over time, due to childbirth, aging, hormonal changes and other factors, women may experience widening and reduced elasticity in the vaginal area. This can cause both aesthetic concern and a decline in the quality of sexual life and self-confidence. Vaginoplasty is a surgery involving the surgical tightening of widened or weakened vaginal muscles, removal of excess tissue and reshaping of the vaginal canal. This procedure both improves the aesthetic appearance and provides a functionally tighter and stronger vaginal structure. The surgery is suitable for women who have had one or several normal deliveries, those who feel widening, looseness and muscle weakness in the vaginal area, those who suffer from reduced sensation and discomfort during sexual intercourse, and women who experience self-confidence problems due to aesthetic appearance.
How it is performed
Vaginoplasty is usually performed under general or spinal anesthesia and lasts approximately 45–60 minutes. During the operation the vaginal wall muscles are tightened and excess tissue is removed, while sutures are made with cosmetic and absorbable threads. The surgery is usually possible in an outpatient setting, meaning discharge home on the same day. If needed, vaginoplasty can also be performed together with other genital aesthetic surgeries such as labiaplasty (correction of the labia minora and majora) or perineoplasty (reconstruction of the perineal area); such an approach provides more comprehensive and satisfying results.
Preparation
Before the operation a gynecological examination is performed and, when necessary, tests are done to rule out infections. If there is an active genital infection, it must be treated first. The patient should inform the doctor about any medications used, especially blood thinners, and follow the fasting rules depending on the type of anesthesia. It is recommended to schedule the operation for a time outside the menstrual period.
Recovery
In the first days there may be mild pain, a burning sensation and swelling; these are managed with painkillers. Returning to light activities is usually possible after 4–5 days. A sexual break of 4–6 weeks is recommended for full healing. Keeping the area clean and dry and following hygiene rules is important. After the wound heals, the aesthetic and functional results become clearly visible.
Frequently asked questions
Does vaginoplasty interfere with future childbirth?
In general, women planning future childbirth are advised to postpone the operation until after their deliveries, since a new birth may affect the achieved result. The individual situation should always be discussed with the doctor.
Are the results permanent?
The results of the operation are usually long-lasting, but aging, hormonal changes and new childbirths can cause the tissues to weaken again over time. A healthy lifestyle and pelvic muscle exercises help to preserve the result.
Vaginoplasty is a procedure with an aesthetic and functional purpose rather than a medical necessity; the decision should be made after a medical consultation, taking individual expectations into account. The time frames given are for general guidance.
